This week, Paramount Pictures released the poster, trailer, and a couple of stills from Ti West’s upcoming Ebenezer, starring Johnny Depp and coming out in November. Also, Depp made a surprise Comic-Con appearance dressed as Scrooge.
The film’s tagline — “Before he was Scrooge, he was Ebenezer” — has caused much mirth online, understandably. What does it even mean? Does it signify a Christmas Carol prequel? But we already know Scrooge’s backstory from the book itself, so what more could a prequel possibly tell us?
The trailer doesn’t help to answer many of those questions, focusing more on Depp’s return to moviemaking than on the storyline:
We”ll have to wait and see whether this is subpar filmmaking, or just a subpar publicity campaign.
