My friend Lori Smith — of http://www.austenquotes.com — had a contact at PBS, and helped me get in touch with her. But if you have a site where you review stuff, it’s not difficult to get review copies even if you don’t have contacts — at least, most of the time it’s not. Now that pretty nearly everyone is on the Internet, it’s easy to get contact information for a network, author, or publisher. And most of the time they’re happy to provide what you need.
I keep saying “most of the time” because recently, I have had trouble getting results with a couple of publishers. Brian Murray (author of that “First Things” article I linked to on July 15) told me that with the economy as bad as it is, some publishers have cut back on sending out review copies. But fortunately, most still send them. They do still need the publicity, after all.
