It’s Charles Dickens’s birthday, and his descendants — along with the rest of us Dickensians — are celebrating! Lucinda Hawksley is speaking about her great-great-great grandfather at the Great Recitations Dickens Festival, held at the Script Haven Bookshop in Worcester. (She recently gave an interview about how Dickens’s views on fairness make him more relevant and important than ever.) Meanwhile, actor Ollie Dickens, also a Dickens great-great-great grandchild, is unveiling a new replica of Southwark’s “Dog and Pot” sculpture that has a special connection with Dickens. Ollie too recently gave an interview about his ancestor, praising the way “he gave a voice to the previously voiceless.”
However you celebrate The Inimitable on his birthday, let us all be grateful that his prescient and profound voice continues to speak throughout the generations!
