Have yourself a merry little filmfest

John Farr at the Huffington Post believes that the Christmas spirit can be found in more Dickens works than just his Christmas stories. So Farr suggests having "your very own Dickens film series leading up to the holidays." His picks include David Copperfield (1935), A Tale of Two Cities (1935), Great Expectations (1946), Oliver Twist (1948), Scrooge (1951), and the musical Oliver! (1970).

Author Peter E. Dans agrees that the 1935 film version of Tale of Two Cities makes a great Christmas movie, in this (spoilerish) article by Michael Sragow. There are those who feel the church scene he mentions detracts from the story, but Dans seems to believe it adds something. (As I haven't seen it in a while and don't remember the scene very well, I can't venture an opinion.)

By the way, Sragow suggests that Robert Downey, Jr., would make a good Sydney Carton. Now there's a very interesting addition to our list of possibilities!

Finally, a Turner Classic Movies alert: The cable channel will be airing the 1938 Christmas Carol with Reginald Owen tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern. It will repeat on December 12 at noon and Christmas Day at 9 a.m.

I don’t really see DC 1935 as a Christmas film…there’s like one short scene at Christmas that wasn’t in the book, but still. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I think he’s going for a broad view, talking about films that aren’t literally Christmas films but that celebrate kindness, generosity, and hope.

Yes, there is a lovely scene in which Carton (the wonderful Ronald Coleman) wanders about in the snow thinking, if I remember correctly. I have this version (it was the first one I watched). I’ll have to dig it out.
And yes, though it’s not a terribly Christmassy movie, it definitely highlights the story of redemption that Christmas is all about.

    No…
Slightly off-topic, but has anyone read any of Dickens’s other Christmas stories, such as The Cricket on the Hearth? If so, would you recommend them?

You don’t think he would? I’d be interested to hear your reasoning. I’ve hardly ever seen him in anything, but I was thinking he might work quite well. But you may know more about him than I do!
The other Christmas stories are yet another part of Dickens’s writings with which I need to catch up, alas!

No reasoning, to be honest. 😛 But if they did cast him, maybe they could get Ioan Gruffudd to play Darnay. There’s enough resemblance to make it work…

Hmm . . . or they could do it the other way around and have Gruffudd as Carton! Now *that* I like. :-)~
Also, bear in mind the old Leonardo DiCaprio rumor. I’d rather see almost ANYONE else play the part. Again, nothing against the man, I just think he’s completely unsuited to the role.
