Dickensian coats of arms

Categories: ,

Not long ago, Nibs called my attention to an intriguing project on another website: the Dickens Character Coat of Arms project. People came up with some pretty cool coats of arms for characters like Mr. Krook and Nemo. We thought it would be fun to do the same thing here, so if you want to try designing one for a Dickensian character, post a link to your creation in the comments section when you're done! You can find some ideas at the Albino Krake site linked above.

As for me, I'm technologically impaired, so I'll probably just draw one and take a picture. (I'm artistically impaired as well, but I can at least trace things pretty well!) But the more sophisticated among you can probably find some sort of computer program to use.

By the way, looks like the Dickens family had its own coat of arms, if this site is to be trusted!

Pity I’m no kind of artist. This would be rather fun.

Neither am I, believe me. 🙂 But I’m going to try anyway. I’ll help you if you want to do one!

I can help you too, Christy. 🙂 I drew mine up a while back – now I just have to remember where I put it!

Well, I’m sure I can come up with all kinds of ideas if someone else wants to draw it.

I think I’ll try to make one this weekend, probably for Ebenezer. 🙂

Here is my submission. It is an Ebenezer Scrooge/A Christmas Carol coat of arms. My disclaimer: I am not very good at drawing :).

I included the cap that the Ghost of Christmas Past carries, the torch that belongs to Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come, as well as a divider made of chains with small dangling items (a chest, the Scrooge and Marley sign, and a coin). On the bottom I put Scrooge with the year of publication of A Christmas Carol.
I am so excited to see your coat of arms!

I like it! The chain is an especially nice touch.

    Nice. Good ideas.

Okay, here’s mine. I did mine on Uriah Heep because there were a lot of symbols you could associate with his character!

    From top to bottom:
    – wine goblet, to represent drinking, tied with the black cloth which Uriah uses after his argument with David
    – pair of snakes, both because of Uriah’s physical description and his evil deeds
    – the burnt pocketbook (readers will know what this signifies) and Tidd’s Practice
    – law documents signed by Wickfield and Heep
    – pair of hands on the shield, to represent his handshake, and his “red right hand” character description
    – and FINALLY, a banner with “Ego Sum Humilis”, meaning “I am humble” in Latin, which language he refused to learn from David.
Whew! Sabrina, I’m glad you participated, great symbolism! Christy, if you have any ideas let me know!
