I started to like this book the moment I came upon Gabriel Varden. I kind of want to hug him.
Apparently, he’s very loosely based on an actual character in the Riots. That is, he performs an action later on that a real historical character performed. And I think Barnaby himself is very loosely based on a major character, too. I suppose I’ll have to reread the introduction to the book.
Barnaby is fun. It’s quite unusual to find a character like him as the major character in a book. -
Keeping to the original schedule is difficult…you just want to keep going. It is interesting though…to read it as it was first written.

All right, finally finished the first 3 chapters. I agree with David – because Dickens wrote each part with a cliffhanger ending, it’s hard not to go on – especially at the end of chapter 3, since we’ve just been introduced to Barnaby.
Dickens’ description of Barnaby is not exactly a positive one, is it? I thought Barnaby was going to be a “good guy”, but whenever Dickens gives a character red hair he’s usually trouble… -
I just finished Chapters 2 & 3 yesterday. It’s a lot more interesting and dramatic than I thought it would be! 😉 I love the quote about “You don’t carry in your countenance a letter of recommendation”, lol.

I have loved it so far and am looking forward to getting into chapters 4 and 5 later this afternoon. I really enjoy reading it in the original installments.
