    For some reason, this made me giggle:
    “Mr. Chester held the bed-curtain farther back, and looked at him with a vague impression that he was some maniac, who had not only broken open the door of his place of confinement, but had brought away the lock.”

    I found it interesting the way Dickens seemed to flesh out Hugh’s character, here – usually when he writes villains (like Fagin, Pecksniff, etc., particularly in his earlier period) they are just *villains*, but Hugh’s childhood here is a motive to his drinking and bad behavior. It’ll be interesting how this plays out…
