    Aw, bummer! Wikipedia had said Mrs. Varden’s name was Martha, and chapter 1 said Edward was “about eight and twenty”. I guess I needed to take a closer look, lol.

    Mrs. Varden’s name *is* Martha — but Mrs. Rudge’s name is Mary. 🙂 I got Edward’s age from chapter 15, where Mr. Chester says, “How old are you? I always forget,” and Edward says “Seven-and-twenty, sir.” It WAS deceitful of Dickens to suggest two different ages! But as “seven-and-twenty” came directly from Edward, who would know best, we’ll have to go with that one.

    I thought that Joe’s father had goaded him into a fight. Ironically, on the day the quiz came out I had just read this in Chapter 72:
    Joe Willet says, “I feel as if I hadn’t suffered any hardships, but had knocked down poor Tom Cobb only yesterday, and had come to see you with my bundle on my shoulder before running away.–You remember?”
    Obviously, I didn’t remember!
