Picspam: Sir Alec Guinness, Dickensian

Posting about Alec Guinness the other day gave me the idea for this. Guinness played four very different Dickensian roles on film over the years. Click below to see images from all of them!

Top to bottom: As Herbert in Great Expectations (1946); as Fagin in Oliver Twist (1948); as Marley's ghost in Scrooge (1970); and as William Dorrit in Little Dorrit (1988), for which he was nominated for an Oscar. 

Here's an interesting bit of trivia I didn't know before reading his memoir: Guinness adapted Great Expectations for the stage in 1939. David Lean saw the production and was inspired to make his own film version in 1946, asking Guinness to reprise his role as Herbert.

    Your blog is awesome. I am a huge fan of Charles Dickens, and have read (almost) all of his novels and many of his short stories. Still only make it part way through Edwin Drood and Barnaby Rudge. . .my favorite is also Tale of Two Cities. Second favorite is whichever I am currently reading. I try to keep one of his novels in rotation at all times. I was trying to subscribe to your feed but am having no luck with the link. Would so much like to read future posts.

    Thanks for the kind words, Cynthia! I wish I could offer some help, but unfortunately, when it comes to those kinds of issues, I’m kind of a dunce. Could it perhaps be a browser issue? When I have problems like these, that’s often what it turns out to be. Maybe a different browser would help.
