A quick note on ‘Great Expectations’

Categories: ,

I'm working on a review now, which I'm going to try to publish freelance. If/when that happens, I'll provide a link here. For the moment, let me just say this: I loved it. LOVED. IT. It was well worth the long wait!

Also — if you go, stay through the credits if you can. You'll see something very cool: Charles Dickens credited as a songwriter. 🙂

I’m glad you liked it and would love to hear your thoughts in more depth! I look forward to that review!
I thought the film was a bit rushed in places (a consequence of trying to put so much of the book in a little over two hours), but considering the time restraints I felt they did an admirable job with the adaptation.
Most of the performances were excellent. I especially liked Jason Flemyng and Jessie Cave as Joe and Biddy. I wish they had more screen time. Ralph Fiennes was phenomenal.
Anyway, can’t wait to hear more from you about this.

I can’t say I loved the new film, though my partner thought it very good. I venture to say that it will be found enjoyable to those who haven’t read the book so recently. HBC was terrific, I grant, and Magwitch was made out to be quite pathetic, but Newell took liberties in altering Molly’s crime by having had her murder Compeyson’s wife. Not in the original… And what David Lean better captured was some of the novel’s humor, whether in the form of Pumblechook or Gargery or even the cows on the meshes who comment on Pip’s guilty appearance.
