Faith, Dickens, and Lewis

Gerald Dickens is participating in what sounds like a delightful project: a play about the writing of The Life of Our Lord. Jeffrey Hatcher (The Duchess) is the writer, and Dr. Gary Colledge, writer of God and Charles Dickens and a friend of this blog, is serving as a consultant.

A staged reading was recently done at The Kilns, home of C. S. Lewis (which is extra delightful to me, since I love Lewis as much as I love Dickens!). Gerald Dickens reports on the project on his blog. I truly hope one day I get to see this.

Thanks to The Buzfuz for the tip!

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Gerald this summer at Dickens Universe. He is a very nice man and a great actor; he performed “Doctor Marigold” and gave it life and pathos.
I’ve also read Dr. Colledge’s excellent book; anyone who wants to know about Dickens’s religious beliefs should read his thoughtful presentation.
I would love to see the result of their collaboration…

I also had the opportunity to see Gerald’s performance at the Dickens Universe this past summer and agree completely that it was an absolutely amazing performance!
I’m interested in learning more about Dickens’ religious beliefs and am wondering where to start. For anyone who has read Dr. Colledge’s book, would this be a good introduction to the topic, od should I begin with something else? (And if so, any recommendations?)Thanks!

Hi Natalie! Dr. Colledge’s book is an excellent introduction to the subject. It’s very well researched and very readable. (His previous book on Dickens’s religious beliefs was an academic one, but “God and Charles Dickens” is written for a general audience.)
