I do believe Dickens wanted to see women empowered, as evidenced in his publishing their works, befriending powerful women, and creating, among others, the marvelous Betsey Trotwood; but he did not see such women as sexually desirable. Instead, he became enamored of the Lucie Manette type. The amazing Betsey is described as masculine in appearance, though “not at all ill-looking.”
