Robert Douglas-Fairhurst's new book The Turning Point: 1851 — A Year That Changed Charles Dickens and the World has just had its U.S. release. Literary Hub has an excerpt, and The New Yorker has a lengthy and thoughtful review (with one or two incorrect details) by Louis Menand.
I was asked in the Dickensblog Facebook group which details in the New Yorker article were inaccurate. I’ll repeat my answer here for those of you who aren’t in there: I was thinking in particular of the line about Dickens forbidding his children to see Catherine, which is often repeated but not true. (He behaved badly enough in that episode that there’s no need to make up even more bad stuff to embellish it!)
